Company: MAIA

Type: Onsite
Employment: Unbefristeter arbeitsvertrag
Description: MAIA is an AI platform for companies. With MAIA, teams search their internal data and embed agents deep into their processes. We support companies in using AI not only in individual departments, but throughout the entire company. Technically, this means: We build a GenAI application with our own agent systems, RAG pipelines and agent-based workflows, connect our customers' external systems and analyze their data. We use the best available models, operated in the EU, and make them reliable for demanding work with large, complex amounts of data. Numerous industrial companies have been working intensively with MAIA for years. After our successful financing round in 2026, we are now bringing MAIA into the mainstream. MAIA has been developed in Leipzig since 2021. As an AI engineer, you will further develop MAIA and help determine how we solve problems right from the start. What you can work on: From concept to feature. Together with product management, you will sharpen rough concepts and be responsible for features from the prototype to further development based on feedback and Usage data. Chat and agents. You shape how people work with MAIA: ask questions, provide context and let agents complete multi-stage tasks - with traceable progress and verifiable results. Develop company knowledge. You connect external systems and make knowledge from different file formats usable. This is how MAIA finds the right places, provides answers with sources and maintains existing access rights. Models and quality. You integrate new language models and compare quality, costs and speed. With Evals you detect errors and systematically improve answers and agents. Secure, fast and stable. You build isolated environments for executing code and tools and improve response times and data processing so that MAIA runs reliably even with large amounts of knowledge. Solid software engineering. You have backend systems built, delivered and operated in production for a long period of time. You are familiar with architecture, API design, data modeling and asynchronous processing. You can recognize weak architecture even if a coding agent wrote it. Very good in at least one of our languages. TypeScript, Python or Go, preferably one of the statically typed ones. You don't have to bring all three with you. You will familiarize yourself with the others. At home in the LLM ecosystem. You have built real applications with LLMs, professionally or in your own complex projects. You know RAG, embeddings, vector search and tool calling from practice, including the places where they fail. You try out new models and frameworks on your own initiative and separate substance from hype. Production experience with LLM systems is a big plus. Measure instead of guessing. You know how to test and evaluate systems that don't always answer the same question the same way. You build the simplest solution that solves the problem. Further retrieval stages, prompt chains or abstractions are only added when measurements justify them. Product thinking. You are thinking about the person who has to use MAIA to complete an offer or clarify a technical question under time pressure. You like to get started with the concepts of product management early on, ask the right questions and come up with your own ideas for solutions, even if everything is not yet decided. Work as an agent. Coding agents are part of your everyday life. You write plans that others can check and that coding agents can build on, critically examine the results and know where they help and where they don't. Think about security. Our customers trust us with their internal knowledge. Client separation, access rights and secure development are a given for you. Communicate clearly. You explain technical connections in an understandable way, including to product management, customer success and sales. You speak German and English very confidently. The role does not include any personnel responsibility. We will discuss openly with you whether you want to join as an AI engineer or senior AI engineer after the technical interview at the latest. We share a common goal: building a really good product. Everyone takes responsibility for their own topic. We enjoy our work and are proud of what our customers achieve with MAIA. The paths are short and decisions are made quickly. In the engineering team, we critically question how we develop and constantly improve our processes, especially in agentic development. We like to work together in our office, centrally between the city center and the zoo, and cook together almost every day. We are on site at least three days a week, the rest you work wherever you want. You decide when your day begins. Access to current Frontier models and coding agents Support with further training that fits your professional development Access to a Wellpass membership The annual gross salary is between €75,000 and €95,000. Where you fall in this range depends on your level. We'll talk about this after the technical interview at the latest. There is also virtual participation via our VSOP. You do not need a cover letter. Send us your CV and answer a question in a few sentences of your own: Why do you want to help shape MAIA? We work with AI every day. But your own perspective counts for this answer. So please write it yourself, preferably briefly and without any polish. If it fits, this will be followed by a 30-minute get-to-know-you, a 90-minute technical interview and a final discussion with the management. After each step, you will usually hear from us within two working days. Our goal is to make a decision in around three weeks. We look forward to receiving your application.
